Funk Style Guitar

After a hiatus from guitar, I am back and working on funk styles from Nile Rodgers to Prince and more. Does anyone have recommendations on specif areas, i.e., scales, chord voicing and, etc., that lend themselves to a funkier sounding style of playing (I should add, from Stevie Wonder to Earth, Wind & Fire to Average White Band, this is my wheel house).
